Market – October 12th

October 11, 2013 By Blue Skys Farm

This week we will be bringing a new item to market, Blue Skys Mesclun Mix!

As is often believed, Mesclun is not a type of lettuce or greens.  Instead it is a French term used to describe any mixture of young and tender salad leaves.  The Blue Skys Mesclun Mix contains the following:

Lettuce
Kale
Mizuna
Chervil
Pak Choy
Swiss Chard

Here are some interesting facts about the contents of our Mesclun Mix.
Source:  Wikipedia

Lettuce – (Lactuca sativa) is an annual plant of the aster or sunflower family Asteraceae.   It is most often grown as a left vegetable, but sometimes for its stem and seeds. Lettuce was first cultivated by the ancient Egyptians who turned it from a weed, whose seeds were used to produce oil, into a plant grown for its leaves.

Kale – (Brassica oleracea Acephala group) is a vegetable with green or purple leaves, in which the central leaves
do not form a head. The species Brassica oleracea contains a wide array of vegetables, including broccoli, cauliflower, collard greens and brussels sprouts.  The cultivar group Acephala also includes spring greens and collard greens, which are extremely similar genetically.

Mizuna – (Brassica rapa nipposinica) was cultivated in Japan since ancient times but most likely originated in China.  Its flavor is mildly peppery.

Chervil – (Anthriscus cerefolium) is sometimes called Garden Chervil or French Parsley, is a delicate annual herb related to Parsley.  Its flavor is mild with a hint of anise.

Pak Choi – (Brassica rapa var. chinensis) is part of the Cabbage Family and is know for its mild cabbage flavor.

Swiss Chard – (Beta vulgaris subsp. cicla), is a leafy vegetable often used in Mediterranean cooking.  Chard is considered to be one of the healthiest vegetables available,
and is a valuable addition to a healthy diet (like other green leafy
vegetables).
Chard has been around for centuries, but because of its similarity to
beets it is difficult to determine the exact evolution of the different varieties of chard.

In addition to the Blue Skys Mesclun Mix we will also be bringing the following items to market:

Kim’s Custom Salad Mix
Arugula
Bright Lights Swiss Chard
Rainbow Lacinato Kale
Shunkyo Semi-Long Radishes
Wax Beans
Tomatoes
Shallots
Garlic
Herbal Teas
Culinary Herbs
and of course…BEAUTIFUL FLOWERS!

See you at the market!
