Farm News

A view of the inside of one of our high tunnels today.  The more delicate of the crops (lettuce and swiss chard in particular) need to be covered with agricultural fabric to protect them from sub-freezing temperatures.

The row that looks empty actually contains carrot seeds.  Carrots usually take 65-75 days prior to harvest, but with the limited amount of sunlight per day, it will be closer to 100 days.

Good news!  Long time volunteer (and high tunnel builder), Jerry, has announced that the steel pipe portion of the high tunnel has been completed.  The remainder of the construction will happen in the spring.  Below, Jerry and Christina hoist a very heavy box of high tunnel plastic to its winter home inside one of the completed high tunnels.  Believe it or not, it is one very large, single piece of plastic that is put over the top of this framework.  As you can imagine, the installation of this plastic must be done with as little wind as possible to prevent the plastic sheet (and helpers) from being lifted high into the sky.
