Come and visit us this Saturday:
Pawtuxet Village Farmer’s Market
Rhodes Place, Cranston, RI
Looks like this Saturday, it could be wet at the market, with a possibly with a thunderstorm. We have yet to miss a market and we hope that you too will come out to see us, rain or shine. Fingers crossed for shine!
Here’s what we’ll have for you this week:
Sugar Snap Peas (last week)
Skyphos Head Lettuce
Bright Lights Swiss Chard
It has been a warm week at the farm this week. Both the crops and the weeds are growing like crazy. The Blue Skys Farm crew have been busy weeding all of the fields. The upper fields in particular have been attended to this week. The potato, squash, lettuce, celosia, lemon verbina, zinnias and straw flower plants are all breathing a bit easier now that the weeds have been removed. In the upper field the most prevalent weed you will find are grasses but there are also a lot of horse nettle (ouch) that you need to look out for.
In the lower fields, it is purslane that is appearing at an amazing rate. Perhaps more so than any other year we’ve seen.
Can you tell what leafy vegetable is hidden by purslane in this photo?
It is lettuce mix, believe it or not, that is growing among the purslane. By the time that the section of lettuce mix was weeded, there was almost a full bin of purslane that had been removed.
Purslane in the tomatillos.
Purslane in the patchouli.
Purslane in the camomile.
These weeds keep us very busy!
Hope to see you at the market!
