Bright Lights Swiss Chard

Farm News!

It has been a warm week at the farm this week.  Both the crops and the weeds are growing like crazy.  The Blue Skys Farm crew have been busy weeding all of the fields.  The upper fields in particular have been attended to this week.  The potato, squash, lettuce, celosia, lemon verbina, zinnias and straw flower plants are all breathing a bit easier now that the weeds have been removed.  In the upper field the most prevalent weed you will find are grasses but there are also a lot of horse nettle (ouch) that you need to look out for.

In the lower fields, it is purslane that is appearing at an amazing rate.  Perhaps more so than any other year we’ve seen.

Can you tell what leafy vegetable is hidden by purslane in this photo?

purslane

It is lettuce mix, believe it or not, that is growing among the purslane.  By the time that the section of lettuce mix was weeded, there was almost a full bin of purslane that had been removed.

These weeds keep us very busy!
