Come and visit us this weekend:
Pawtuxet Village Farmer’s Market
Rhodes on the Pawtuxet
60 Rhodes Place, Cranston
Saturday, 9am–12pm
We will be bringing the following items to the market this week:
Gold of Bacau Pole Beans
This bean originated in Bacau, Romania. A 6-10″ long, flattened, golden Romano-type bean with excellent sweet flavor. Even when the seeds begin to form the pods are still string-less, tender, and sweet.
Fortex Pole Beans
Growing to over 11″, Fortex produces extra-long, round pods. Dark green, firm-textured pods are completely string-less and delicious at all lengths, even after the seeds enlarge.
Lemon Cucumbers
Small, rounded, pale yellow cucumbers, 1½-2½” in diameter. This versatile cucumber is sweet and flavorful, and doesn’t have much of the chemical that makes other cucumbers bitter and hard to digest. Though often served raw, Lemon is also a good pickling cucumber.
Salt and Pepper Cucumbers
White-skinned, 3-5″ pickling cucumber with great flavor.
Socrates Cucumber
A 7–8″ fruit. Smooth thin dark green skin that gives way to crunchy sweet seedless pale green flesh.
Collard Greens
Collards have a taste similar to that of Kale but milder. Collards and kale can be cooked like spinach, but they normally require a longer cooking time. Southern cooks often add a bit of bacon, ham, or salt pork to the greens for flavoring, sometimes serving them with pepper sauce or vinegar.
Red Russian Kale
Stems are purple; leaves are flat, toothed, and dark green with purple veins. This kale’s leaves are tender compared to other kales. For salads and light cooking.
Bright Lights Swiss Chard
A must read.
Panisse Head Lettuce
A large, lime-green, lobed oak leaves with excellent flavor.
Red Ace Beets
A round, smooth, deep red beet with a sweet flavor.
Chioggia Beets
The Chioggia beet (pronounced kee-OH-gee-uh), hails from Northern Italy and is most notable for its striking deep pink and white spirals. This beet has an especially sweet flavor and adds a beautiful pop of color to both raw and cooked preparations.
Zlahta Radishes
This tan, medium-sized radish originated in Poland. It is crunchy and crispy with white a interior. Spicy but not overwhelming, good fresh and even better braised.
Flowers!!!
